President Akufo-Addo has weighed in on the ongoing debate concerning the voter's register, addressing the calls by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for a forensic audit.
According to the President, the opposition's demands lack merit and have since been put to rest.
Speaking in an interview with France24, President Akufo-Addo explained that the NDC’s claims surrounding the integrity of the voter's register were unfounded.
He pointed out that the Electoral Commission (EC) had publicly addressed the matter, presenting evidence that undermined the opposition’s accusations.
President Akufo-Addo emphasized that the EC’s recent broadcast had thoroughly discredited the NDC’s calls for an audit.
He noted that the Commission’s transparency on the issue had effectively demonstrated that there was no basis for the opposition’s concerns.
The President further stated that, following the EC’s clarification, the NDC had now agreed to adhere to the Commission’s planned programme.
This, he said, was an implicit acknowledgment that their previous demands for a forensic audit had no solid foundation.
President Akufo-Addo expressed satisfaction with the resolution of the issue, highlighting the importance of the EC’s role in ensuring a credible electoral process and maintaining public confidence in the system.
“The other day the EC chose to broadcast publicly its deliberations on these issues, and I think the whole country came to realise that in fact there was no substance in the claims that the opposition was making,” he said.
“They had now gone ahead to say that they will abide by the programme that the EC has laid out. I think that that means implicitly that the demands that they were making have been shelved and they have to be shelved because there is no substance to it,” President Akufo-Addo added.
