National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has allegedly been arrested by some plain-clothed security officers around Tesano.
Eyewitnesses say he was making his way to his car after participating in a television discussion on Accra-based UTV on Monday when five officers believed to be from the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) ambushed him with an arrest warrant.
He was taken away in a white pick-up vehicle with registration number VR 4870 – 12 and is believed to be at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Police Headquarters.
Although the reason for the recent arrest is unknown, Mr Gyamfi has been under investigation since December last year over alleged cybercrime offences.
He has been accused of forgery and publication of false information targeted at tarnishing the image of the Akufo-Addo government.
His last trip to the Police Headquarters in honour of an invitation on December 23, 2019, was rescheduled by the security service.
Mr Gyamfi subsequently filed a suit at the Accra High Court asking for his arrest warrant to be overturned.
Meanwhile, Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Peter Boamah Otokonor told Myjoyonline.com minutes after the arrest that what government is doing through the security operatives “is an attack on democracy and an attempt to test the patience of the opposition NDC.”
According to him, party executives, officials and supporters are massing up to storm the CID Headquarters in support of the outspoken NDC Communications Officer.
