A police corporal with the Ashanti Regional Anti-Robbery Taskforce has been shot and wounded in a gun-battle with armed robbers one of whom was killed.
The shootout in broad daylight at Aboabo-Akorem, in Kumasi, saw Corporal Frederick Tawiah hit in the ankle.
He is currently on admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Accident and Emergency Unit.
The task force was acting on a tip-off on the presence in the community of a suspected armed robber identified only as Basit, on police wanted list.
The fugitive had until now outwitted police on several occasions and succeeded again on Monday only to resurface in the Aboabo Akorem Area.
As the police team in a taxi cab accosted him, he is said to have ordered his armed men to attack the state security agency personnel.
Sources say the enduring gun –battle which lasted for about 15 minutes in Hollywood movie style, left residents running for their lives.
Several ammunition shells were left at the scene, with traces of blood on the ground.
One of the robbers, who is yet to be identified, was killed in the process.
Police retrieved a Hyundai Santa Fe vehicle with registration GN 2042-15, talisman, mobile phones and other items from the suspects.
The Regional Police Command is expected to officially brief the media on the incident Tuesday morning whilst it hunt for members of the robbery gang.
