The aide to New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, says unity, not rivalry, will define the NPP after its just-ended presidential primaries.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Sunday, he dismissed concerns that the keenly contested race could leave lasting divisions within the party.
“Let me tell you something,” he said. “NPP, there’s an existing mantra in the party, unless you are not part of our party, that says that after competition is cooperation.”
Dr Bawumia was officially declared the winner of the NPP flagbearer race by the Electoral Commission after securing 56.48 per cent of the total votes cast, earning the party’s ticket for the 2028 general elections.
His closest challenger, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, placed second with 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 per cent.
With the primaries concluded, Mr Aboagye insisted the contesting phase is firmly over.
“Yesterday, you heard from Doctor Mahamudu in his speech, and he also heard from all the other four contenders,” he said.
“The elections are over. The campaigning period is over. We no longer have competitions. We no longer have factions.”
He acknowledged that emotions remain fresh in the immediate aftermath of the vote.
“Of course, it is barely eight or eight hours or so after the elections,” he said. “People need time to adjust.”
According to him, some party members may still retain campaign structures in the short term, but that phase will pass quickly.
“There are some who will still be going to their campaign offices or to try and reorganise it,” he said. “But give yourself a month, all the campaign offices will be shut down.”
Mr Aboagye said the party will soon operate under a single banner with a singular focus.
“One NPP able, one political party focused on it and execute on executing a formidable campaign against the National Democratic Congress,” he said.
He urged supporters to trust the party’s internal democratic culture. “Trust the NPP to come together,” he said.
Describing the NPP as a party driven by ideas, he said internal competition has never undermined unity in the long run.
“The NPP is a party of ideas, and sometimes you may see us compete fiercely,” he said. “But once the competition is over, the understanding is that democracy wins.”
According to him, party members respect the majority will and rally behind the chosen leader.
“Democracy says that this is where the majority of the people are, and so everybody would rally around the leader,” he said.
Mr Aboagye rejected suggestions that factions would persist.
“There are no factions,” he said. “We are going to do whatever we have to do to make sure that the few outliers that may come up are all brought on board.”
He said any signs of division would soon disappear.
“Let’s give ourselves one to three months,” he said. “You would not even notice it.”
