The former deputy Communications Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is pushing the Electoral Commission to create a new voters’ register for the 2020 polls in order to disenfranchise many voters.
He believes this is the case because none of the reasons given by the Electoral Commission for its decision to create a new voters’ register, according to him, makes logical or technological sense.
Speaking on Joy News’ news analysis programme, Newsfile, the NDC Parliamentary candidate for Abura Asebu Kwamankese said “everybody who reasons carefully and is open-minded will tell you that their arguments do not make sense. Once the Vice President indicated that holders of the voters’ ID card could have a number of foreigners among them, the EC perceived that as an order to compile a new register.
“The sudden acceptance of that deeply flawed, unsubstantiated position by the NPP on the register is what has left us where we are and we [NDC] believe strongly that all this is aimed at voter suppression,” he added.
The discussion about whether or not the EC should create a new register for the 2020 polls seems to be nowhere near ending although the Commission says its mind is already made.
Parliament has already approved the EC”s ¢390 million budget for the creation of the new register despite protests from the Minority.
But taking into consideration incidents from the past, Mr Kwakye Ofosu is convinced that the governing party is behind the EC’s insistence on creating a new voters’ roll although a legal process was initiated to test the validity of the register – which it passed.
“Elections were held and the NPP has never stopped wasting our ears about the fact that they won by a million votes. We have a president who has gone on to establish a government that is operating legitimately. In December when the District Assembly elections were held, 6,000 Assemblymen who were sworn in about a week ago were elected.
“Thirty-five thousand Unit Committee Members, all deemed validly and legally elected came out of that process. On what basis, therefore, does the entity that supervised all of this come out to tell us that there is the need to replace this register,” he queried.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu is certain that the current voters’ register is credible and can be used to conduct free and fair elections without any problems.
“The only trouble that is pending is being courted by the EC at the instigation of what I believe to be political masters.
“In the absence of any logical argument, that is acceptable to reasonably minded people, I say they are doing this for political reasons,” he added.
