President Akufo-Addo has filed his nomination as the flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2020 polls at the party’s headquarters in Asylum Down, Thursday.
This was after the Special Advisor to the President, Victor Newman picked the presidential forms on his behalf last month.
President Akufo-Addo told his teeming party supporters that he had handed his documents over to the leadership of the party.
The leadership endorsed it and I have handed it over to the General Secretary, he added.
According to him, if by close of the day, no one picks up form or files any, then he will be greatly honoured to be the only flagbearer to run on the ticket of the governing NPP.
While this is the fourth time the President is seeking to lead the party into a general election, this is the first time he is going unopposed.
In 2012, President Akufo-Addo contested 16 other people including Alan Kyerematen, Dan Botwe, Boakye Agyarko and Prof Frimpong Boateng for the position of flagbearership. But the number reduced drastically in 2016.
He was received at the party’s headquarters amidst drumming and singing by the party chairman, Freddie Blay and General Secretary John Boadu.
Confirming vice president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate, the President said he was confident of securing sound victory over the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer former President John Mahama.
He used the opportunity to call on party members to be tolerant of each other, as the party heads for its parliamentary primaries.
