Some parents in Berekum have expressed concern about the effects of the ongoing teachers' strike.

According to some parents, their children are at home, without any meaningful activities to occupy them.

On March 20, the three teacher unions namely, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Ghana National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT-GH) declared an official strike due to unsatisfactory conditions of service.

According to the unions, the government had failed to renew its collective agreement, among other concerns, following its expiration in 2023.

They argued that since all efforts to get the government to the negotiation table have proven futile, laying down their tools was their last resort.

In an interview with Adom News, several parents shared their struggles and challenges since their children have been home due to the ongoing teacher strike.

According to some of the parents, the children make a lot of noise and engage in certain activities which they are not happy with.

“Since the strike started, the children are always disturbing and running around. They do not listen to us when we talk to them. We plead with the government to do what the teachers want so the children can go back to school.”

“The children are home and eating too much food. When they are in school, we know that they are the responsibility of the teachers. So we are pleading with the government to do what is right so that the children can go back to school,” another said.

According to the students, they were instructed to stay home due to the teachers' strike till further notice.

They stated that they spend their time at home doing nothing and sometimes go to the park to exercise to pass the time.

“Our teachers are gone on strike, so we decided to come to the park to play football and exercise.”

“I plead with the government to address the needs of the teachers so that we can go back to school. Some of us are suffering at home. We want to go back to school to learn.”
