The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a third suspect in connection with the alleged assault of a 12-year-old girl at La.
According to the Police, the incident occurred on Tuesday, December 30. In an update issued by the Regional Public Affairs Unit on Wednesday, January 21, the Police said the third suspect “voluntarily reported herself to the Police” on Sunday, January 18.
The suspect has been identified as Priscilla Novishie Wornyo, aged 49. The Police stated that she was “accordingly arrested and formally charged to assist with investigations”.
The three accused persons were put before the court on Monday, January 19. They were charged with “Conspiracy to commit Assault, contrary to section 23 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960 (Act 29), Assault, contrary to section 84 of Act 29; and Cruelty to a Child, contrary to section 14 and 15 of the Children’s Act 1998 (Act 560)”.
The court granted bail to two of the accused persons, Precious Giftan Mesopeh, aged 22, and Princess Giftan Mesopeh, aged 25. They were each granted bail with two sureties.
However, the third accused person, Priscilla Novishie Wornyo, was remanded into Police custody. She is expected to reappear before the court on February 2.
The Accra Regional Police Command has assured the public of its resolve to protect children and deal firmly with abuse cases.
The Police said it remains “committed to the protection of children and to ensuring that all persons involved in acts of abuse are brought to face the full rigours of the law”.
"Further updates will be communicated as the investigations progress," the Police added.
