The Manhyia District Police Command has arrested two men in connection with the unlawful possession and transportation of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs following an intelligence-led operation at the Asawase Market in Kumasi.

The operation, conducted on July 21, 2026, resulted in the seizure of 100 compressed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs concealed in fertiliser sacks hidden among second-hand clothing.

The suspects have been identified as Osman Bassein, 37, and Mohammed Abdul-Razak, 38.

In a statement signed by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo, the Police said the operation was launched after receiving credible intelligence that suspected narcotic drugs were being transported in fertiliser sacks.

Acting on the information, a team led by the Manhyia District Commander, supported by personnel from the Manhyia Divisional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Zongo Police Station, proceeded to the location and arrested the two suspects.

During a search conducted in the presence of independent witnesses, officers recovered 13 fertiliser sacks.

Police said further inspection revealed that the sacks contained second-hand clothing concealing 100 compressed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs.

The exhibits were photographed at the scene in accordance with evidential procedures and have since been secured for forensic examination.

The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations and will be processed in accordance with the law, subject to the outcome of the investigations.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command commended members of the public for providing timely and credible information that contributed to the operation.

It also encouraged the public to continue supporting law enforcement efforts by reporting suspicious activities through the Police emergency numbers 18555 (MTN toll-free), 191 or 112.

Police noted that investigations are ongoing and further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
