With just seven days left to the end of his 120-day social contract with Ghanaians, President John Mahama is set to launch the National Apprenticeship Programme today, Wednesday, April 30, in Tamale.

The initiative seeks to tackle youth unemployment by removing the cost barrier to skills training in the informal technical and vocational sectors. Under the programme, the government will pay master craftsmen to train young Ghanaians, who will also receive allowances during their training period.

Speaking at the Gbewaa Palace to invite the King of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abubakari Mahama II ahead of the launch, CEO of the National Youth Authority, Osman Ayariga, said the programme is a direct response to the concerns of the youth and traditional leaders.

"The President has sent us here to tell you that he listened to your concern. One of the programmes he's putting in place to reduce youth unemployment is the National Apprenticeship Programme," he said.

According to Mr Ayariga, beneficiaries will not only learn a trade but will be supported throughout their journey. "Government will pay the master craftsman to train the apprentice to learn how to practice. When the person is actually enrolled, government will be giving the person allowance so that the person will be able to go to work and come back home," he explained.

The programme also includes a startup component.

"When you are done with the apprenticeship programme, the government will set you up to be able to open your own small shop or your own small kiosk to be able to fend for yourself and your family," Mr Ayariga added.
