Lawyer and Accounting Professor, Kwaku Asare, has lashed out at the Convention People’s Party (CPP) for setting what he believes are exorbitant filing fees for vacant slots in the party's leadership ahead of the 2020 general elections.
The party founded by Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, said in a press statement issued Monday that persons aspiring to lead the party in December 2020 as its presidential candidate will pay ¢200,000 as filing fee plus ¢2,000 for the nomination form.
Persons interested in the position of National Chairman will file their forms at a cost of ¢100,000 – also plus a nomination fee of GH¢2,000.
In its bids to encourage more women and the youth to aspire to higher political office, aspirants for the position of National Women Organiser and National Youth Organiser will file their form at a reduced cost of ¢20,000.
However, in a sharp rebuttal, Prof Asare, known popularly as Kwaku Azar, an outspoken social commentator, said the party was charging unreasonable fees for the slots.
“What is the political culture that allows such unreasonable high filing fees just to serve the people?
“Why should the flagbearer pay almost 8 times the number of votes (25,552) that the last presidential candidate got?” he posted on his Facebook page.
Meanwhile, the Central Committee for the party has approved March 8, 2020, for the Congress which will be held in Kumasi.
Deputy Communication Director, Benjamin Nsiah, has urged interested persons to pick up a form early so there can be adequate time to fill and file it.
