Amnesty International Ghana has appealed to President Akufo-Addo to refrain from endorsing the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the Anti-LGBTQI+ Bill.
The Country Director of Amnesty International Ghana, Genevieve Partington, argues that the bill violates the privacy rights of Ghanaians and could lead to severe repercussions if enacted into law.
This call was made during a meeting involving Amnesty International Ghana, several Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), and the Attorney General, Godfred Dame, on Tuesday, March 12.
Genevieve Partington emphasised the potential impact of the bill's approval by the President on individuals perceived as homosexuals.
“We are appealing to the President not to sign the bill into law as it will have dire consequences on Ghana.”
In addition, Madam Partington urged the government to fulfill its obligation to protect the rights of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
She asked the Attorney General to promptly address human rights concerns such as the Community Sentencing Bill, Death Penalty Bill, and Witchcraft Accusations Bill.
