Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged members and supporters of the NPP to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding amid what he describes as growing political intimidation.
His remarks come in response to the attempted arrest of Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South and Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee, by operatives believed to be from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
Dr Bawumia visited the MP following the incident, describing him as being “in high spirit and undaunted” despite the raid on his residence.
In a message to party loyalists, Dr Bawumia said, “I charge all Party faithful to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding in this period of unfortunate political persecution.”
He maintained that the NPP remained committed to the rule of law and democratic principles, even in the face of provocation.
He reiterated his call to President John Dramani Mahama to rein in security operatives and prevent the politicisation of state institutions.
“The security institutions of our country must not be reduced to political tools used to harass and intimidate opponents,” Dr Bawumia stressed, warning that such tactics would not be accepted by Ghanaians.
Describing the conduct of the security officials as a “descent into lawlessness and fear,” Dr Bawumia emphasised the need for professionalism and accountability in Ghana’s security services.
He reassured the NPP and its supporters that the party would stand firm against abuse of power and continue to uphold the values of democracy and justice.
