Road safety campaigners in the Ashanti Region have expressed concern about the recent increase in road crashes.
Between January and October 2021, 470 persons have died in road accidents in the region from 2800 accidents since the beginning of the year.
This figure shows a 12 percent increase over the same period last year.
Ashanti regional director of the National Road Safety Authority, Hajia Simbiatu Wiredu, spoke at a road safety forum organised by the Men's Fellowship of the Apostolic church Ghana.
Over 2,380 persons have died in road accidents across the country since the beginning of the year.
81.9 percent were male and 18.1 female.
The accidents involved 23,488 vehicles, with 12, 898 persons sustaining various degrees of injuries. According to the National Road Safety Authority, the figure is one of the highest in recent times.
Miss Wiredu says there is a need for all stakeholders to come together to ensure that drivers and pedestrians abide by the road traffic regulations.
Violation of road safety regulations is one of the main causes of accidents.
That's why the Men's Fellowship of the Apostolic Church Ghana has decided to embark on a road safety campaign to reduce road accidents.
The latest campaign by the church took place at Obuasi and surrounding areas.
Members of the Apostolic Church men's fellowship educated drivers on the need to obey road safety regulations.
Road users have been urged to be disciplined on the road.
National Men’s Superintendent of the Apostolic church Ghana, Apostle Dr. Samuel Tetteh Walker, indicates, “It is our plea they would drive safe that’s why our slogan comes out clearly, 'susu ko na nkwa ho hia"
Some drivers however attribute accidents to poor road markings, among others.
They want urgent attention to the situation.
