Finance Minister Dr Casiel Ato Forson has announced that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will reintroduce road tolls later this year, with a modern technological approach.
Delivering the 2025 budget address in Parliament on Tuesday, March 11, Dr Forson explained that the reintroduction of road tolls was necessary due to the government’s commitment to sustainable revenue generation, particularly after the abolition of the e-levy, bets tax, and other taxes initiated by the previous government.
"The reintroduction of road tolls will be driven by technology to ensure efficiency and transparency in the collection," Dr. Forson said, emphasising that the new system will make the process smoother for road users and improve the management of the funds collected.
The tolls were abolished by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
The decision to bring back road tolls comes amid ongoing efforts to address the country's financial challenges. The Minister believes the reintroduction is an important alternative to generating funds to support infrastructure projects, improve road networks, and fund other key development initiatives.
Dr Forson reassured the public that the new toll system would be fair and convenient, focusing on streamlining the process through technological advancements to avoid congestion and ensure that tolls are collected efficiently.
Earlier, the minister of roads and highways, Kwame Agbodza also hinted that the toll will be reintroduced as it is one of the critical sources of fund generation for the economy.
