The West Mamprusi Municipal Security Council has directed all mobile money vendors in the municipality to stop operations after 5pm in a move to address robbery attacks on them.

This follows the robbing and killing of two vendors and injuries to seven others in the Walewale township by armed robbers.

Already, the Ghana Police Service through an intelligence-led operation, has arrested two suspects identified as Zakaria Yamusa alias Vandam, and Fataw Issah in connection with the robbery attack.

Speaking to JoyNews, the Municipal Chief Executive Officer Aremeyaw Somo Lucky said the new directive has become necessary to save lives and property.

"Because of the arrangements that we have made, robbers will not get people to attack and so now their main target is mobile money vendors.

"So now the security decided that by 5pm every day in the evening every mobile money vendor should close and go back to where he or she comes from", he said, adding that the measure will ensure the abnormality becomes a thing of the past.

"Secondly, we are also looking at the periodic search of vehicles, motorbikes and also we are going to ban the unlawful holding of guns in the municipality completely and that is some of the measures we are looking at.

"Fortunately the IGP has sent us more men and more patrol teams" he said.

Mr. Aremeyaw Somo Lucky, however, explained that this new directive will be reviewed constantly so the activities and livelihoods of the vendors are not affected.

"This is going to be a temporary measure for some time so that we will study the security in the area. If there is a need for us to review it as time goes on we will do that but for now, that is what we are going to do to make sure that at least we can stop the robbery of the mobile money vendors on our main streets and in our communities."

Meanwhile, the Police say an intelligence operation is still ongoing to get all other perpetrators involved arrested.
