The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has instructed its members to hold off on the planned increase in transport fares.
The union had initially proposed a 20% upward adjustment in fares starting January 24, 2024.
The drivers attributed the move to the increasing cost of spare parts and other logistics essential for their activities, citing incessant taxes.
Transport Deputy Minister, Hassan Tampuli urged all parties involved to come to the table to discuss and find an amicable solution.
"So, this is just the tip of the iceberg, so sometimes it gets very heated in our meetings, but at the end of the day, we can come to a compromise.
"I believe on this occasion it would not be any different from what has happened in the past,” he said on January 18, 2024.

However, the GPRTU has suspended the directive ahead of a consultation expected to take place on January 23.
In a statement signed by GPRTU General Secretary, Godfred Abulbire, his outfit's management and transport operators will engage in a stakeholder consultation with the Ministry of Transport on January 23, 2024, to address the matter comprehensively."
