A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, Awal Mohammed, has stated that internal alignments within the party end once a flagbearer is elected, stressing that the focus must now shift to unity and reconciliation.
According to him, the conclusion of the flagbearer election marks the end of internal competition and the beginning of collective party work aimed at strengthening the NPP ahead of future elections.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Tuesday, 3 February, Awal Mohammed explained that once a flagbearer is chosen, the candidate returns to the party to work with its leadership in charting the way forward.
“We went through an election to select a flagbearer. After the flagbearer is elected, he goes back to the party, and the party executives, together with him, will make decisions on the way forward,” he said.
He added that reconciliation is the most important responsibility at this stage, noting that the flagbearer is expected to lead efforts to unite all party members.
Awal Mohammed noted that this approach is not new to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, recalling similar steps he took after winning the party’s presidential primary in 2023.
“After he won in 2023, he visited every one of them within days, some at night, to speak to them and call on them to come and support him so that we move as a united front,” he stated.
He also expressed excitement over recent comments by Dr Arthur Kobina Kennedy, who has been critical of the NPP in the past, describing his remarks as encouraging for the party’s unity drive.
According to Awal Mohammed, hearing Dr Kennedy express readiness to work with the party reflects the spirit of reconciliation needed after internal elections.
The NPP recently concluded its presidential primary as part of preparations towards the 2028 general elections, with party leaders urging members to put the contest behind them and work together going forward.
