The standoff over DStv pricing has taken a fiery twist as minority members on the Committee of Communication and Information have hit back at Communication Minister, Samuel Nartey George.
The NPP MPs are accusing him of arrogance, disrespect, and making a U-turn on his earlier tough stance against the satellite television provider.
In a sharp rebuttal signed by Ranking Member Matthew Nyindam, the Minority said they were not surprised by Sam George’s recent comments on JoyNews, claiming his reputation for “pomposity” is well known among Ghanaians.
The Minority insisted they had been diligent in their work, stressing that it was the duty of the committee chairman, not individual members, to summon meetings to address the DSTV impasse.
They recalled Sam George’s earlier declaration that he would not allow any meeting with DSTV and the Ghanaian authorities to end without an agreed reduction in subscription prices.
At the time, he had dismissed the company’s proposal of free upgrades as unacceptable, demanding instead a price slash of no less than 30 per cent.
“But it appears that his stance has shifted,” the Minority charged. “The question remains: who between him and the minority members is incompetent?”
The group outlined fresh demands, calling on the Minister of Communication to explain why government abandoned its original position on price reductions and to account for the monies collected from the GH¢10,000 levy imposed on DSTV since its inception.
Responding to what they described as insults from Sam George, the Minority declared they would not ask for an apology.
“It is a trait too expensive for him to afford,” the statement read.
Reiterating their commitment, the Minority emphasised they remain dedicated professionals, always ready for scheduled meetings and determined to hold both government and service providers accountable.
