President Mahama's acting spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has stated that the new government faced significant threats upon taking office that required urgent action.
Some people have criticised the president for spending too much time on forming his government to do business.
However, according to Mr Kwakye Ofosu, there were urgent matters that the president needed to tackle immediately after his inauguration before moving to other matters.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu was speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, 21st January.
“Right after the transition, when the President was sworn in, we discovered that there were major, major threats that needed to be eliminated immediately. Otherwise, we would face some crisis. One of them was the power situation,” he asserted.
He mentioned that the energy sector was in disarray and required swift action to avoid a further crisis, highlighting several significant issues within the sector.
“The sector was burdened with excessive debt that was basically strangling the life out of the sector. IPPs were owed in excess of 5 million dollars, several other players were owed, there were problems with the purchase of fuel to fire thermal plants, and there were issues with efficiency in the delivery of some energy sector utilities,” he explained.
He explained that some of these critical issues had to be tackled while the President also focused on forming his government at the same time.
