Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo, has described match venues used in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) as “death traps,” calling for urgent improvements in safety standards.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Adongo likened the conditions of GPL venues to hazardous environments, following the stabbing of Asante Kotoko fan Francis “Nana Pooley” Frimpong at Nsoatre.
He was killed during Kotoko’s Week 19 clash with Nsoatreman in Nsoatre.
"I was very sad to hear my colleague mention that they were struggling to get very simple first aid. We don't have ambulances,” Isaac said on the floor of Parliament.
"You have no business playing football in such a field. That is a death trap, but we go there, and nothing happens, so we think that is a football field - no,” he added.
"What was the police situation at the football field? Where were the police? What was the security requirement that was supposed to be upheld in the stadium?” he questioned.
The Ghana Premier League remains suspended as investigations continue into the incident.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association announced an enhanced Matchday Safety and Security Protocols which includes the appointment of a Safety and Security Officer and the installation of CCTV cameras.
GH₵20k fine and venue ban loom for clubs who fail to adhere to the new security protocols
