The Minister in charge of Special Agricultural Initiatives, Dr Peter Boamah Otokunor, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernising agriculture through greenhouse farming, citing substantial investment and ongoing improvements across key facilities.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, April 15, Dr Otokunor praised the progress made but stressed the need to optimise operations for greater productivity and impact.
“We have invested heavily in greenhouses, and what I think we should do more is to add a bit more attention to the efficiencies in some of the greenhouses,” the Minister stated.
He highlighted that the Akumadan facility, which forms part of Ghana’s broader efforts to boost year-round crop production and reduce reliance on food imports, is a model for what greenhouse technology can offer when properly managed.
“Last weekend, after the launch of the Feed Ghana Programme, I passed through the Akumadan greenhouse facility, and they are doing a great job,” Dr Otokunor added.
The government unveiled the new agriculture initiative dubbed "Feed Ghana Programme" to facilitate a transformation of the country's agricultural sector.
The programme was officially introduced in Techiman in the Bono East Region, on Saturday, April 12, 2025.
The initiative seeks to boost agricultural production to feed the population, provide raw materials to feed agro-processing factories and create jobs for the teeming youth.
