The flagbearer of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Kofi Akpaloo, has stated that the government needs to borrow money to invest in the economy of the country.
In a conversation with Roselyn Felli on Prime Morning on Wednesday, October 12, he indicated that investing in the country’s natural products with loans taken from international financial institutions will enable Ghana to gain more interest after trading the products.
He believes borrowing to construct factories and employ people will enable them to work efficiently and effectively to boost the country’s economy.
“There’s nothing wrong with borrowing but what you borrow to do with the money is the most important thing, because when you borrow money to build roads, schools, among others, it must be paid for," he explained.
He added, “how do you pay for all those things? You should have something that also generates money. So you have to borrow money to invest in the economy to expand economic activity."
Mr. Akpaloo assured the populace that when elected President of Ghana, his government would invest largely in the agricultural sector.
He said the importation of rice would be banned.
"Taking over tomorrow as President of Ghana, I’ll find money to invest in agriculture. Food that we eat, we’ll make sure we produce them locally. Like rice, I’m going to cut the importation of rice.
“After six months in government, I’ll ban the importation of rice because I’m going to put money directly into rice production," he assured.
He also promised to provide funds to all poultry farmers in order for them to expand their capacity and build factories to process the products.
"Every church, including the mosque, every charity organisation will file their annual audited accounts. Now, a church must be registered as a company without a shareholding. It means it doesn’t have an owner, it’s the government that has ownership,” he hinted.
Mr. Kofi Akpaloo is confident of winning the 2024 presidential election, saying his love for the presidency is a calling from God.
