The Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA) has demanded that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) disclose what is causing the erratic power supply in the country.
In a press release signed by its Communications Director, Joseph Obeng, the Association charged ECG to among other things tell its members what it is doing to fix the load shedding aka dumsor.
The Association says it needs the timelines for the fixes in addition to a load-shedding schedule to assist its members in effectively planning their businesses.
Expressing concern over the adverse effects of dumsor on the economy, the Association highlighted its detrimental impact on productivity across various sectors.
Despite numerous appeals from Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC), ECG has yet to furnish a load-shedding timetable, exacerbating the challenges faced by businesses.
GUTA underscored the significant hurdles posed by the erratic power supply, particularly for manufacturers struggling to maintain production schedules and adequately plan for their workforce.
Moreover, the reliance on generators due to unpredictable outages has inflated operational costs, further burdening businesses.
“Its negative impact on the entire economy is overwhelming as it affects every sphere of productivity from agriculture and trade to industry.
“Traders-Shop owners, Wholesalers, Tailors and Dressmakers, Electricians, Artisans, and all those who use electricity in their business are suffering a great setback as a result of this “Dumsor” phenomenon, creating an unbearable situation for businesses in the country,” it noted.
