A 22-year-old pregnant woman, Olivia Nyande, reportedly collapsed after receiving the news that her husband had been struck dead by lightning at Kassadjan, a suburb of Kadjebi in the Oti Region.
The deceased, Joseph Aborbor, a 25-year-old mason apprentice, was killed by lightning during a rainstorm accompanied by thunder on Saturday, March 21.
The tragic incident has thrown the quiet town into a state of shock and mourning.
According to family sources, Ms Nyande could not withstand the emotional trauma upon hearing of her husband’s death and was said to have gone comatose shortly afterwards.
She was promptly rushed to the Kadjebi Health Centre, where she was treated and later discharged.
Unconfirmed reports in the community have linked Aborbor’s death to a recent motorbike theft case.
It is alleged that the owner of the missing motorbike sought the intervention of the Zakadza deity to expose the person responsible.
While some residents suspect a connection between the alleged spiritual intervention and the lightning strike, no official evidence has been established to support the claim.
Authorities are yet to comment on the incident, and investigations are expected to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at Jasikan Municipality Hospital morgue for preservation and further examination.
