The Ghana Gold Board, in collaboration with the Goldbod Taskforce and National Security operatives, has apprehended 25 individuals, including both Ghanaians and foreign nationals, over allegations of illegal gold trading, smelting and assaying.
Speaking to the press on Monday, Deputy CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, Richard Nunekpeku, Esq., revealed that the arrests followed two separate intelligence-led operations conducted at Dome Pillar 2 and Akweteyman-Achimota in Accra.
Mr Nunekpeku stated that the raids resulted in the seizure of over GH¢64,000 and USD 112,500 in cash, as well as numerous gold bars and other valuable items believed to have been used in illicit activities.
He confirmed that all suspects have been granted police inquiry bail, with some already arraigned before the courts, while others remain under investigation.
Reiterating the Board’s commitment to sanitising Ghana’s gold sector, Mr Nunekpeku issued a stern warning to individuals and entities operating without valid licences, urging them to cease such activities immediately.
He further stressed that the Ghana Gold Board, in partnership with security agencies, would continue to intensify surveillance and enforcement nationwide, ensuring the protection of Ghana’s mineral wealth and compliance with the law.
