A Dutch national and two other suspects have been picked by the police as key suspects in the 866 parcels of a white powdered substance suspected to be cocaine.

The substance, which according to the police has a street value of around US$6.9 million were concealed in sacks of gari at the Tema Port enclave.

It was an intelligence-led operation that led to the arrest by the Tema police.

The police have named the suspects Gilano Horwin, aged 31.

The others are John Mensah Sabah, 41; and Alhaji Iddris Haruna.

The police intercepted the 40-foot container, which was being loaded with the parcels.

The Tema Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Eric Asamoah Asiedu, at a press briefing on Thursday (August 6, 2026), a separate narcotics operation on the same day als resulted in the arrest of another suspect.

DCOP Asamoah Asiedu said the Command received intelligence at about 7:15 p.m. on August 5, 2026, that some young men were loading parcels of a white substance concealed in sacks of gari into a 40-foot container at a warehouse within the Tema Port enclave.

He said the consignment was being prepared for export when a police team arrived at the scene and found three men who supervising the loading operation.

According to DCOP Asamoah Asiedu, the container was mounted on a white DAF truck with registration number WR 1118-10. The suspects, together with the truck, were taken to the Tema Regional Police headquarters.

He said a search of the sacks led to the recovery of 866 parcels of a white substance suspected to be cocaine, with an estimated value of US$6,928,000.

DCOP Asamoah Asiedu said during interrogation, Owin allegedly stated that the substance was cocaine and claimed ownership of it.

The three suspects have been detained to assist investigations, while the exhibits have been secured for forensic examination to determine the exact nature of the substance.

The Regional Commander said investigations were ongoing. 

In a separate operation on the same day, the Prampram District Police intercepted a taxi allegedly transporting substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

DCOP Asamoah Asiedu said the Tsopoli Police received information at about 5 p.m. on August 5, 2026, that the taxi was being pursued.
