Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, says the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has successfully cleared a backlog of 440,000 unprinted driver licence cards that had piled up as of December 2024.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, September 17, the Minister explained that the outstanding cards had now been printed and dispatched to the various DVLA offices across the country for collection.
“As of December 2024, the DVLA had a backlog of 440,000 unprinted driver licence cards. Currently, all those backlog cards have been printed and dispatched to the various DVLA offices for collection. A total of 26,045 cards are currently undergoing lamination and will be delivered shortly,” the Minister said.
The Minister also announced reforms by the Authority to expand its services and support the government’s 24-hour economy policy.
He noted that a new operational office had been opened at the Adenta bus terminal in Accra, which now runs on a 24-hour basis.
In addition, four new DVLA offices have been commissioned in Adenta, Bole, Asamankese and Akwatia.
Two more offices in Dormaa and Bechem are expected to be opened later this month.
On road safety, the Minister said the government was working to amend the Road Traffic Regulations to help reduce fatalities.
