Ghana moved to the top of Group C in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after a fairly comfortable 1-0 victory against São Tomé and Príncipe on Monday afternoon.
A Jordan Ayew goal from the penalty spot in the second half was enough to ensure the Black Stars made it back to back wins for the first time in eight months.
Kwesi Appiah’s side dominated proceedings in the first half managing 78% of possession while attempting 7 shots.
The Black Stars were largely kept at bay by the São Toméans due to the poor nature of the artificial turf coupled with a very defensive approach from the Central Africans.
The best chance of the first half fell to Samuel Owusu who benefited from a goalkeeping error. The Al-Fayha man saw his shot blocked as both teams went into the half-time break deadlocked.
Ghana came out of the tunnel a different side in the second half as they looked more threatening.
Five minutes after the restart, the pressure paid off as Emmanuel Boateng was brought down in the box by the São Tomé keeper.
Jordan Ayew stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to score his 15th goal for Ghana on his 56th appearance.
Ghana eased their way to the final whistle as they kept 80% of the possession against a São Tomé side ranked 180th in the world.
The Black Stars next qualifying match against Sudan will be played next year July.
