The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has mounted pressure on President Nana Akufo-Addo to take decisive action on his appointees allegedly linked to the illicit sale equipment seized from illegal miners.
The opposition party is further calling for a “full scale bipartisan investigation to the scandal” as well as “Proper inventory and accounts of all confiscated assets of the illegal miners.”
It follows reports of the alleged disappearance of several hundreds of excavators and mining equipment retrieved from persons engaged in illegal mining popularly known as ‘Galamsey’ by the Operation Vanguard team.
Suspended vice chair of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ekow Ewusi, who is said to have played a role in the missing equipment, is in the grips of the police assisting in investigations into the matter.
But the NDC in a statement issued and signed by Volta Regional Secretary, James Gunu, wants the president to prove to Ghanaians that he is committed to fighting the menace of illegal mining and take immediate action to suspend Minister for Environment Science and Technology Innovations, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng and the former Lands and Natural Resources Minister, John Peter Amewu.
