Former President John Mahama has called on the Akufo-Addo administration to offer the support needed to address the increasing Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) cases in the Northern part of the country.
In his recent lockdown write up series, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) described the disease as a silent killer which is not getting the required responsiveness in order to curb the deaths and infections occurring by the day.
“Meningitis is reported to have killed 37 people in the Upper West Region, out of hundreds who have contracted the illness.
“Even as we focus on the Covid-19 pandemic, we must not take our eyes off endemic diseases that have a tragic history of annually exacting a significant toll on our people,” he wrote.
Addressing issues related to the Covid-19 pandemic, the leader of the opposition NDC called for the additional medical research centre and testing sites in the country.
He was of the view that continuous testing and enhanced surveillance is the effective means to measure and determine when the country reaches its peak and know how to flatten the curve.
“From the latest statistics and escalation in numbers, it is clear we are in a difficult spot in the battle to contain Covid-19. But together we can overcome the uncertainties of the moment.
“The latest revelation that 57.1% of infected persons have no history of foreign travel is particularly worrisome. It implies that we may have begun to experience community transmission of the virus.”
The former President also advised medical and science expects to guide the decision-makers with the appropriate models of the route the disease is likely to take to implement initiatives that can contain it efficiently.
Wishing the citizenry a Happy Easter, Mr Mahama also expressed his condolences to families who have lost their relative to the novel coronavirus.
“It is my prayer that this Season will offer our dear nation God’s unfailing Mercy and Grace to overcome the surge of our present pain.”
