National Democratic Congress (NDC) Sunyani West parliamentary aspirant, Millicent Amankwah Yeboah, is constructing a mechanised borehole for the Gyaasi community of Chiraa in the Sunyani West District of the Bono Region.
This comes in response to an appeal by residents of the community some months ago about their struggle with accessing potable water.
The borehole, when completed, will serve hundreds of households with quality and hygienic water for domestic use.
At a recent sod-cutting ceremony, Chiraahene Berima Mintah Afari ll, Damongo MP Adam Mutawakilu, Bono Regional Chairman of the NDC Nyamekye Marfo and other party executives, were present.
Chiraa, a farming community in the Sunyani-West district of the Bono Region, had been relying on a stream in the community for water.
However, the stream that serves as a source of water is the same source of water for animals.
Residents say the stream has been infested with Guinea worm.
"The surroundings of the stream look dirty. People here get infected with Guinea worms in this day and age. Chiraa is not a village and deserves better", a resident lamented.
"When it rains, so much dirt enters the water that we drink, wastewater from washed cloth flows back into the water," another resident said, with an appeal to authorities to come to their aid.
During her campaign, Millicent Amankwah Yeboah, who is making a first attempt for the seat, observed that people drink from the unhygienic stream even as they share it with animals.
As an immediate measure, she provided blocks and cement for a wall to be erected around the source of the water while promising to construct a borehole in the future.
With the sod-cutting ceremony, Millicent Amankwah is making a firm effort at fulfilling her promise at a time that the World Health Organisation and the Ghana Health Service are urging frequent hand wash under running water
"It is sad to see people drink from this water, and after few consultations and together with my party executives, my NGO and a partnership with some Arabian friends, we are constructing this mechanized borehole for the community," she said.
“We are not interested in the monetary aspect of this project but the impact on the people," she added.
“The same project will be constructed at Dumasua and other communities in the Sunyani West District”, she said.
Chiraahene Berima Mintah Afari ll praised Millicent Amankwah Yeboah, and said her intervention is a step in the right direction in observing the Covid-19 safety protocols.
"We are told to wash our hands frequently under running water. A borehole with available water at this moment is timely and for that, we are grateful to her," he said.
He advised parliamentary aspirant who has already presented Veronica Buckets, sanitizers, soaps, and tissue papers to the community, to remain a servant of the people even as she climbs high on the political ladder.
He advised her to respond to the community anytime her assistance was needed.
