Former Sports Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye says the Ghana Football Association (GFA)'s decision to name Charles Kwablan Akonnor as the head coach of the Black Stars amounts to a conflict of interest.
The broadcaster turned politician believes there is the tendency of the coach serving the interest of the FA President whom many claim is the manager of the former AshGold boss.
"Left to me alone, Kurt shouln't have made that appointment," the MP for Odododiodio constituency told Joy Sports.
"With the sort of thinking that people within football have [I don't think it is a good decision]."
The appointment of Mr Akonnor was questioned by quarters within the football industry because of these associative allegations.
Kurt denied those claims at a press briefing early this year, saying: "I don't manage CK Akonnor and I don't manage any coach. I have had a working relationship with so many people including CK himself, but I don't manage him."
Despite his denial, Nii Lante insists the choice of Kwasi Appiah's successor should not have any relationship with any FA official.
"People have said that [Okraku] manages CK Akonnor as a person. So, it is wrong [for the FA head to appoint someone he manages].
"It smacks of conflict of interest to have made CK Akonnor the coach of the national team. To some extent, I will tend to agree with those people," he said.
The veteran sports commentator was quick to add that, he has no problem with the appointment of Akonnor, but fears players who are allegedly managed by Kurt Okraku or his company could be considered before other quality materials good enough for the national team.
"I have no problem with Kurt deciding who should be the coach and I have no problem with CK Akonnor being the coach in the first place because CK Akonnor had a very wonderful playing career [for Ghana]."
"[But] the issue has to do with the fact that, is the appointing authority not going to exercise any influence over him, is one of the questions we've not asked."
"If the GFA president has a management company which is managing some players and also managing the coach, there is the tendency in one way or the other, players who are on the books of that sporting management company or agency will have some undue favouritism as compared to other players who have nobody."
"I think the best players should always be called to the national team. The coach should have the right to call the best. Nobody should influence the coach," he admonished.
The lawmaker wants Ghanaians to let go the perceptions surrounding his engagement and support him to chalk success.
"Let's all support him, he is a very intelligent guy. I think that he's just not been lucky but he is quite intelligent. I think that with a group of other intelligent old footballers, we could do something."
Akonnor is yet to lead the Black Stars in any game since his hiring in January.
