Former Attorney General Betty Mould-Iddrisu has described John Mahama’s choice of Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang for running mate as a win for women.
According to her, the news brought joy and a sense of achievement to the women in the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“We the women were stunned that we had finally done it. Former president John Mahama would be so forward looking and maybe so much in consonance with the reality of Ghana that he would choose a woman as a running mate.
“Not just any woman but a woman of substance, a woman of integrity, a known player in politics and someone who commands wide respect across the country,” she said.
Madam Mould-Iddrisu described the Professor as ‘eminently qualified even more so maybe than the men”.
She noted that most of the criticisms that have surfaced after the former Vice-Chancellor of University of Cape Coast’s outdooring were geared towards her gender rather than her substance.
She added that this is characteristic of instances where women are put up for leadership roles.
“Her nomination has changed the tone of the political discourse, the rancor, bitterness, name calling, mudslinging and unfortunately that is directed at her gender and not at the substance at who she is. I think we have changed the political discourse for the better,” the former Education Minister said.
Speaking further, she said Prof Opoku-Agyeman would bring her critical thinking skills at the point of decision making.
She stated that more women need recognition in the political space.
Madam Mould-Iddrisu shot down the claims of the Majority leader that Naana Opoku-Agyemang was not qualified for such a position, stating “the choice is that of the flagbearer and not of the opposition”.
