D.K. Poison met with President Akufo-Addo last year

President Nana Akufo-Addo has directed the Youth and sports ministry to pay back an amount of $45000 to Ghana's first boxing world champion, DK Poison on compassionate grounds.

The president's decision to pay the 45-year-old debt comes less than 24 hours after Joy Sports' documentary, The Boxing Loan aired on JoyNews on Monday night.

The airing of the documentary by Nathaniel Attoh was preceded by a chain of stories on multimedia platforms to raise awareness on the milestone and the unpaid amount.

This is an amount DK. Poison willingly gave to the Ghana Government over four decades ago, out of his fight purse for the importation of essential commodities, during rather harsh economic times.

D.K Poison who is now 78 years old marked the 45th anniversary of his annexation of the world title on a quiet note on September 20 and is the main character in the documentary titled the boxing loan.

The letter signed by the Secretary to the President, Nana Asante Bediatuo indicates that the amount will be paid on compassionate grounds.

The letter, copied to the Vice President, the chief of staff, Minister for youth and sports the National Sports Authority, and the Ghana Boxing Authority president as well as D.K. Poison himself.

It directs the Finance Ministry to take the necessary steps to have the amount paid.

D.K Poison is the very first sportsman to win global silverware for Ghana in any sport after annexing the WBC title in 1975. This was after defeating the dreaded Reuben Olivares in California USA.

The documentary will be aired again on Tuesday at 6:30 pm on JoyNews TV.
