The National Director of Health Promotions at the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Dacosta Aboagye, has announced that government is set to establish a wellness centre to deal specifically with non-communicable diseases.
Speaking at a meeting with the Chiefs and Queen mothers of Wa in the Western Region, he explained that the move comes on the back of revelations that majority of the persons that lost their lives as a result of Covid-19 had other underlying health conditions.
“If you compare it [Covid-19 death toll] to the general disease statistics in terms of death in our country, these diseases also seem to be high in terms of the prevalence of mortality. For this reason, as a country, we are calling for action on non-communicable diseases.
From 2021, government has agreed to run a program called the ‘Wellness Centres’. This is a form of wellness programme where Ghanaian citizens will be able to visit health facilities to have their vitals checked,” he said.
Also speaking at the event was the Deputy Minister for Information, Mr. Pius Enam Hadzide, who mentioned that government remains committed in the fight against the virus, and urged the Chiefs and Queen mothers to render their support in order to successfully tackle the disease.
He used the platform to preach unity ahead of the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
"We must remember that elections are about counting heads, and not cutting heads. We must therefore eschew any ethnocentric tendencies that have the potential to divide us," he said.
Ghana has currently recorded a total of 46,829 Covid-19 cases, with 466 still active and 303 deaths.
