Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, has overruled an appeal by Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, to allow media coverage of the Interior Minister's address to the House.
The address, which is expected to observe the Interior Minister, Ambrose Derry, brief Parliament on measures put in place to ensure the security and safety of MPs, is to occur in camera, as ordered by the Speaker.
The South Tamale MP is however of the opinion that a closed sitting will deny the Minister a chance to re-assure Ghanaians of public safety.
“I believe that the public is interested in knowing what parliament, in collaboration with the Inspector General of Police, is doing in response to the President's call” he added.
But Prof. Mike Ocquaye maintains that the general public can be reassured by the MPs during interactions with the press.
The Interior Minister's parliamentary briefing follows the murder of Mfantseman MP, Ekow Quansah Hayford, who was shot by armed robbers on the Abeadze Dominase – Abeadze Duadzi – Mankessim Road on his return from a campaign trip in the early hours of Friday, October 9, 2020.
Many have referred to the incident as one that calls for a strengthened security presence in the country.
