The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South constituency, Samuel Atta Akyea has revealed the next Speaker for the 8th Parliament.
His statement comes at the end of a secret voting process in Parliament following several scuffle and chaos by MPs-elect on Thursday.
"By the declaration, we know that Honourable Alban Bagbin becomes the Speaker of the House because of the numbers," he said.
Speaking to JoyNews, he noted that after a closed door interaction with NPP MPs, the figures proved to be in favour of cAlban Bagbin as the next Speaker.
"I am told that he garnered 138 votes and we had 136 votes and one spoilt ballot. The whole procedure is that it is a majority vote. It is not about saying you need a quorum and you need one-third of the House," he stated.
Ahead of the voting for the next Speaker, Clerk of Parliament, Cyrill Nsiah gave the Assin North MP-elect, James Gyakye Quayson the nod to go-ahead to participate in the election of a Speaker for the 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic despite an injunction issued against him.
This, according to Atta Akyea, served as illegality that was condoned and led to the choosing of the next Speaker of Parliament.
He insisted that James Quayson should not have voted after confirming to the House of receiving the writ of an injunction granted by a Cape Coast High Court preventing him from participating in the proceedings of the house.
"A court of law has injuncted somebody that he cannot even put himself out as a Member of Parliament-elect. The Chairman of the proceeding out ruled that the individual could not participate in the proceedings.
"But for some weird reason, he was allowed to participate in the proceedings," he stated.
Mr Atta Akyea has described the proceedings to the choosing of Speaker for the 8th Parliament to be inaugurated as "tainted and appalling."
