Ghana defender Gideon Mensah has opened up on how his deal to FC Barcelona failed at the last minute.
Mensah who joined RB Salzburg in 2019 impressed during pre-season and caught the eye of big clubs.
One of which was Spanish giants Barcelona.
The five time Champions League winners wanted to sign Mensah as a backup to Jordi Alba.
In an interview with Citi Sports, Mensah admitted contact was established with his agent regarding a move to Barcelona.
“He [My former agent] told me that he received a call from Barcelona informing him that they needed a back up left back for Jordi Alba because their regular back up had departed to Monaco.
“If the deal went through I was going to have a first team contract on loan while I played in the second team. If there was the need I would step in as back up.
In the deal, Mensah’s former representatives were supposed to adhere to a non-disclosure agreement. Unfortunately, the news came out and Barcelona had to pull the plug on the deal.
“He [My former agent] spoke to me in the night and the next morning I woke up to the news all over Facebook.
“I called him and questioned him about how the news got out. He was not someone who was familiar with the Ghanaian media so I was in shock.
“He denied knowledge of how the news got out. We were supposed to stay underground with the move until it was concluded,” the player added.
The former WAFA player revealed he had parted ways with his former agent after this saga.
“Down the line I stopped working with him.”
Mensah is currently on loan at Vitória de Guimarães where he has played 19 games.
