The Krachi West and Jasikan District Assemblies in the Oti Region have been upgraded to the status of Municipalities.
Oti Regional Minister, Joshua Gmayenaam Makubu announced this when the Parliamentary Select Committee on Local Government and Rural Development paid a working visit to him at the Oti Regional Coordinating Council (ORCC).
Krachi West District, one of the oldest districts was formerly part of the then Krachi District which was established by Legislative Instrument in March 1989, until the Eastern part of the District was cut off to create Krachi East District on August 4, 2004.
Jasikan District is one of the eight districts of the Oti Region, formally created as an ordinary District Assembly on March 10, 1989, also established by Legislative Instrument (L.I) 1464, until the Western part of the district was cut-off to create Biakoye District on February 29, 2008.
The Regional Minister affirmed that both districts adequately qualify for Municipality status considering their population among other criteria.
Mr Makubu thanked President Akufo-Addo for ensuring that Krachi West and Jasikan residents get their fair share of development.
He, however, appealed to the Parliamentary Select Committee to factor the new Municipalities into their report and work plan and assist them with requisite resources for development.
The District Chief Executive of Jasikan, Lawrence Aziale noted that many attempts by previous governments to elevate the Assembly failed to materialise.
He said enough work was done to achieve this and is expectant of an inauguration ceremony by the close of the year.
