Former President John Mahama has stated that Ghana is facing a crisis of confidence in political leadership.

According to him, the country's economic fortunes and democratic credentials are in dire straits under President Akufo-Addo-led government.

In a Facebook post in commemoration of the June 4 Revolution, the Former President said that the uprising forty-two years ago, shaped the course of Ghana's history resulting in a turnaround in the country's economic fortunes and the birth of the 4th Republic.

However, under the President Akufo-Addo led government, Mr. Mahama noted, "Ghanaians are saddled with economic hardship, insecurity, political and ethnic polarization, deepening inequality, politicization of our democratic institutions, corruption, and serious problems in the education and health sectors."

He therefore proposed broad consultations that will bring the best and brightest together with stakeholders to tackle issues confronting the nation, such as; economic recovery and challenges bedeviling the implementation of the Free SHS policy.

This year's anniversary of the June 4 revolution, is the first after the death of the leader of the June 4 Uprising and the first President of Ghana under the fourth Republic, Flt. Lt. J.J. Rawlings.

"For the first time, the people of Ghana, comrades, supporters and sympathizers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will commemorate the June 4 Uprising without the physical presence of the Founder of our party, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings (Rtd.), our former President, who departed from us last year."

"He was a key influence on Ghana's history for the two decades straddling the late 70s till year 2000. The June 4 Uprising was an epochal event that represents a major landmark in our nation's existence," he said.

Mr. Mahama believes that the values June 4, truth, transparency, probity and accountability, espoused some four decades ago, remain relevant in Ghana's democratic journey.

He further said the revolution engendered hope in Ghanaians that the ills of our society would be rooted out and replaced with values of virtue and honesty.

The 2020 Flagbearer indicated that if Ghana is to work again and regain the citizens' trust in state institutions, there is the need for everyone to develop the attitude of 'fearless honesty' as enjoined by the national anthem.

He also called for freedom of thought and expression rather than a culture of hypocrisy and silence.
