A Retired Police Officer and MP for Wa West, Peter Lanchene Toobu has called on government to handle issues concerning the country's security carefully.
Referring to the recent surge in armed robbery cases in the country, Mr Toobu indicated that when news breaks about a robbery incident, authorities only do what is culturally acceptable based on their political affiliations but fail to put in stringent measures to curb the menace.
Speaking to Benjamin Akakpo on the AM Show Wednesday, he stated that is about time government puts an end to politicisation of the National Security apparatus because it puts the citizenry in danger.
"On the matters of security I have told people you don't have to colour it. Security has no colour because it is about Ghana. So when you try to politicize security, you destroy the integrity of the country. In fact, that alone is a threat to National Security. Politicisation of security services is a very dangerous thing," he stressed.
On May 15, a policeman was killed while on escort duty on the Adansi Fomena road in the Ashanti Region.
The armed men, numbering about 10, allegedly shot Lance Corporal Martin Babah during an attack on the bullion van he was escorting.
There was also a daylight robbery at Pigfarm in Accra on Wednesday June, 9. It has left many residents worried after an unidentified man was shot in the stomach.
Checks by JoyNews’ Maxwell Agbagba revealed that the robbers, on a motorbike, were in pursuit of the 34-year-old victim who had in his possession a backpack.
Also on June 9, two armed men broke into a forex bureau near Honeysuckle in Osu and made away with an undisclosed amount of money.
Then on Monday June 14, a police officer, Emmanuel Osei and a hawker, Afua Badu, were killed by armed robbers at Adedenkpo, a suburb of James Town. The police officer was providing escort for a bullion van while the hawker was standing by the road when they were murdered. The driver of the van sustained severe gun shot wounds and was admitted at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. He is currently responding to treatment.
This has raised some concerns and personnel of the Ghana Police Service are working around the clock to bring perpetrators to book while they consider measures to put the security of the country in order.
