The Ghana MineWorkers Union (GMWU) of TUC has launched its annual week celebration to create awareness and campaign on key issues relating to the mining industry and the Ghanaian society in general.
Key among the issues is the infrastructural deficit across mining communities in the country.
The week-long celebration has been set on the calendar of the union to be observed in June every year.
A number of activities have been lined up to be performed by the union during the period.
The 2021 edition, the maiden of the annual event, is slated for June 21 to June 25. It is themed, “Integrating labour and community interest for socioeconomic development.”
Activities earmarked
Key among the activities earmarked for the commemoration of the week is the hoisting of MineWorkers’ union flags and distribution of paraphernalia across the its constituencies.
The union will also pay courtesy calls on key stakeholders in the mining communities. Some of the stakeholders include traditional leaders and other leaders across the mining communities.
The GMWU will also campaign on the glaring infrastructural deficit in these mining communities.
“After over 100 years of mining, it is abundantly clear that mining communities continue to register worse forms of outcome that we all expect that it should not take place at all.” said the General Secretary of the Union, Abdul Moomin-Gbana at the official launch of the programme.
The union intends to embark on some donations targeted at certain institutions in the mining communities.
The union will also engage in interactive interviews on radio and television with members and the general community on issues bordering the mining sector.
The union will offer a unique ID card to all members plus a fully funded insurance cover for the member and spouse as well as two parents or two parent in-laws and two children under what it christened “MineWorkers’ Union Abusua Insurance Scheme.”
The insurance cover starts on July 1, 2021
