President Akufo-Addo has charged the newly constituted council of the Ghana Police service to come up with the necessary guidelines to ensure a professional police force that is responsive to its duties.
According to him, the effective discharge of their mandate will aid the IGP to build a police service that is accountable, transparent, trustworthy, respectful of fundamental human rights and accommodate the concerns of the public.
Swearing in the 10 member body on Tuesday, President Akufo-Addo said that “I am counting on you as members to discharge your functions well so as to help maintain law and order in the country. The council is mandated to advise the president on matters of policy relating to internal security, including the role of the Service, budgeting and finance, administration and the promotion of officers.”
The new council is chaired by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The members of the council are Minister for Defence, Dominic B. A. Nitiwul, Minister for Interior, Ambrose Derry, Minister for Foreign Affairs & Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchweey, Vice Admiral Seth Amoama and Chief of Defence Staff, AVM Frank Hanson.
Others are Chief of the Air Staff, Maj. Gen. T. Oppong - Preprah Chief of Army Staff, R/Adm Issah Adam Yakubu, Chief of Naval Staff, Brig. Gen R.O. Sackey (Rtd), President's Nominee, Col. C.B. Ankomah-Danso (Rtd) and Master Warrant 0fficer Daniel Addo, Senior Warrant Officer.
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has praised the Inspector General of Police stating that he has demonstrated strict application of the law.
For the President, the general acceptance of the leadership qualities of the IGP, Dr Akuffo Dampare by the country demonstrates that he is the man for the job.
“His actions thus far have received, the strong backing of Ghanaians, and as many are now realising if you fall foul of the laws of the land, you will not be spared,” he added.
