The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament has asked the National Security Minister to classify information concerning the President’s travels as top secret.
According to Bryan Acheampong, the travel information which several Ministers are currently being tight-lipped on, should not be released into public domain.
He said doing so would fuel political gimmicks.
He made these remarks whilst contributing to the debate on the 2022 budget statement in Parliament on Tuesday, November 23.
North Tongu MP, Okudzeto Ablakwa had filed questions in Parliament to get government to account for the ‘Arabian Knight’ travel style of President Akufo-Addo.
The former Deputy Education Minister said it is insensitive to the plight of tax-paying Ghanaians.
However, Bryan Acheampong said, “the vehicle that the President travels in is inconsequential in these matters for as long as we want to play politics with it.”
The Abetifi MP further argued that the use of chartered flights by the President bothers on national security and should not be discussed on the floor of Parliament.
He said, “Hitherto it was confidential that could be shared, now it has been classified as secret and I have encouraged him to increase the security level to top-secret because that information is not one that can be placed in the political arena.”
