The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the 2023 African Games has officially unveiled the logo, mascot and website for the competition.
The ceremony for the launch took place in Accra on Thursday, December 16, 2021 and was led by the Minister for Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif.
The Sports Minister, on behalf of the president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo outdoored what was dubbed as the triplets; the logo, the mascot and the website.
Addressed in Ga language, the logo was named, Akweley, the mascot, represented with an eagle, was named Akorkor, and the last born, the website, Tawiah.
Ussif speaking at the event in Accra also explained the rationale behind the decision to use the eagle as the mascot for the games.
"The wisdom behind the mascot is that the eagle symbolizes courage, strength, focus, and immortality. Eagles fly higher than any other bird. The height of success that those with an eagle mentality can achieve is amazing. Generally, those with an eagle mentality are strong, brave, creative, insightful and visionary."
"We have taken the posture of the eagle and success is our only option. It is against this background that the Ministry in collaboration with the LOC settled on the eagle," he said.
The games, which will take place in Ghana will be the 13th edition since its inception. The Legon Sports Stadium and the Borteyman Sports Complex will be the two venues to be used during the games.
