It is exactly two weeks since the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) laid down their working tools due to government’s inability to address the 'worrying' conditions of service of lecturers.
After the Association began its strike on January 10, efforts by government to get university teachers back to school have so far proven futile.
Among other things, UTAG wants government to reconsider the payment of its annual research allowance to a more realistic allowance “as this is critical to our research output, promotion and ultimately national development.”
According to the National Labour Commission (NLC), UTAG's strike is illegal, but the Association is set on continuing its strike unabated.
Teaching and learning in various public tertiary institutions such as the University of Ghana have come to a standstill.
The academic calendar for "Legonites" started a week ago; yet, students have not had any lectures.
Considering UTAG's resolve, public universities across the country are at risk of a mass shutdown as UTAG's strike enters its third consecutive week.
Apparently, students are tired from staying home and want to resume learning. Some social media users have called on UTAG to call off their strike.
#UTAG we beg.

Student leaders should come together in admonishing both parties to reach a compromise. If not, the times ahead will indeed be disturbing and detrimental! This #utag strike must be resolved. https://t.co/EIbDZ1XEJZ

But a recent comment from the General Secretary of UTAG, Prof. Ransford Gyampo, on Facebook shows that teachers will not be returning anytime soon. He was rectifying a report that supposedly indicated that UTAG had called off its strike.
Prof. Gyampo, who has been vocal on the matter, noted that "CETAG has called off its strike. UTAG remains on strike because, up till now, there's been no offer made by the government. All TAG no be TAG."
In a press statement today, the leadership of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) announced the suspension of their strike action.
The Association had withdrawn their services close to three weeks.
His comment on Facebook has been trending on Twitter. Users seem enthusiastic by Mr Gyampo's creativity to coin the phrase "All TAG no be TAG."
Meanwhile, some say students are pleased by UTAG's strike.
