Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed has accused President Akufo-Addo of fighting anyone who is up against corruption.

His comment comes after President Akufo-Addo on Wednesday terminated the appointment of the Managing Director of the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL).

In a letter dated February 4, 2022, to the Company’s Board Chair, the Transport Minister said, “per a letter No OSP127/22/104 dated on January 31, 2022,” the President has directed the sacking of Mr Yaw Kwakwa.

Kwaku Ofori Asiamah added, “In this regard, kindly take the necessary steps to give effect to the directive. I count on your cooperation.”

Although, it is unclear why Mr. Kwakwa was fired, the Airport Company Limited and McDan Aviation, a newly founded private jet company, have been engaging in a public back and forth in recent weeks.

On January 1, the GACL ordered the newly launched McDan Aviation to suspend the use of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) until further notice because McDan Aviation was accused of breaching the laid down procedure after procuring its license to operate in 2019.

Reacting to this development, Mr Mohammed said the sacking of the GACL MD “has to do with the illegality McDan was engaged in.”

“The Ghana Airport Company in a statement issued described his [McDan] action as illegal,” he noted.

He added that “it is very clear that there is a turf war between McDan on one hand and Gabby Okyere-Darko and Nana Asante Bediatuo on the other.”

“Find out who are those managing the VIP Lounge at Terminal 3. So they consider his action as an act that is competing with what they have been engaged in and I am saying that Airport was built by somebody.”

He said the timing and the circumstances surrounding the sacking also prove his point.

“More so when you have a Deputy Minister and his Deputy singing different songs, I think that it supports the view that the gentleman’s dismissal has to do with the turf war that we are experiencing,” he reiterated.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Transport Minister, says President Akufo-Addo is not obliged to explain why he sacked the Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Yaw Kwakwa.

According to Hassan Sulemana Tampuli, since the President did not state why he appointed the embattled Manager, he is not required to give reasons for firing the appointee.
