The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has called for an end to the acrimonious relationship that exist between the leadership of Parliament.
The Suame Member of Parliament (MP), in his closing remarks to end the first meeting of the second session, asked the leadership of the House to wean themselves off the mistrust they have for each other.
In a speech read on his behalf by the Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, he also cautioned the MPs against making unfounded allegations against colleagues, a situation he believes threatens parliamentary democracy.
He believes that reconciling with one another in their duties can help keep the sanctity of the House “by assisting leadership in our quest to constantly engage in spirit of consensus building.”
“Mr Speaker, indeed Parliament remains the beacon of hope to champion our democracy. In this regard, may I call on colleagues and leadership to peck themselves of mistrust for each other. Trust and confidence are bedrocks for consensus building.
“Let me encourage all of us to engage in serious introspection and reconciliation with ourselves, with each other and with our creator, God Almighty during Easter.
“This, I believe, is a very significant step in responding to our core mandate of representing the interest of every Ghanaian devoid of political affiliations,” he said.
He, however, commended the legislators for eschewing violence in times of disagreement on the floor of the House.
“We are leaving this Chamber back to our various constituencies and homes, knowing that even when we disagree, we can express same without being physical. Today, as a House, we agree that we must use the tools available within the imperatives of the Constitution to resolve such disagreements.
“That in itself is good for democracy. Mr Speaker, as a House, and by our conducts, we have also demonstrated that we are a capable pillar of our democracy and will not do anything that will give hope to any adventurers to, as it were, terminate our otherwise flourishing democracy,” he added.
