The Ministry of Communications and some six other institutions risk being disconnected from the national grid.
According to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Ministry of Communications, Kofi Annan Peacekeeping Center, United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), National Information Technology Agency (NITA), and the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA); are among the numerous institutions heavily indebted.
The public and private institutions have been served disconnection and demand notices, according to sources.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Accra West Region of ECG, Mary Eshun, noted that the seven institutions owe an amount of GH¢9,824,642.89.
The PRO gave the breakdown on Accra-based Citinews as follows:
- Ministry of Communication – GH¢5,080,752.37
- United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) – GH¢558,014.13
- Internal Audit Agency – GH¢545,740.68
- Kofi Annan Centre – GH¢208,318.50
- Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) – GH¢277,300.32
- National Information Technology Agency (NITA) – GH¢1,543,113.68
- University of Professional Studies (UPSA) – GH¢1,611,403.21
In March this year, the Finance Ministry and Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO)Â were among the institutions listed by the ECG to be disconnected from the national grid for failing to pay their bills.
The power distribution company revealed that the two state-owned organisations owed GH¢421,038.02.
The institutions were served notice after the ECG disconnected power supply to the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) and parts of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), which owed over GH¢48 million.
The ECG also cut power supply to the Accra Sports Stadium and La Palm Beach Hotel for the same reasons.
